Overview & History

In line with the role statement of “creativity-inspiring undergraduate education,” our University has been offering a B.A. (Hons.) in Humanities Programme since 1990. The Humanities Programme (HUM) is committed to a distinctive mission of higher education that incorporates a bilingual, interdisciplinary and cross-cultural curriculum that develops and sustains the whole-person education mission of the University.

The B.A. (Hons) programmes in Creative and Professional Writing (CPW) together with HUM, are enrolling about 80 students each year. Given the significant expansion in size and growth of academic teaching as well as research, the Department of Humanities and Creative Writing (HMW) was officially established in 2012 to house the three programmes, namely:

  • BA (Hons) in Humanities (HUM)
  • BA (Hons) in Creative and Professional Writing (CPW)

The Department of Humanities & Creative Writing offers B.A. degrees related to the studies of humanities and creativity, a flourishing field corresponding nicely to the educational goals of the University.

Mission of the Department

The mission of the Department of Humanities and Creative Writing (HMW) at Hong Kong Baptist University is to cultivate resilient graduates with humane ideals, who are active agents of change towards a more equitable, inclusive and diverse society.

HMW emphasizes pragmatic intellectual skills, including bilingualism, interdisciplinarity, and multiculturalism in order to enable students to be adaptive and open-minded in face of challenges, and to apply their training with empathy, reason, and a spirit of collaboration towards building a cosmopolitan world.

We honour creative capability, critical thinking, and cultural sensitivity, so that students learn to respect differences, advance purposeful impact in our world, and anchor their education in civic responsibility of humankind.
