This Poetry Writing course explores the art of writing poems, focusing primarily on
modern and contemporary English-language lyric poetry with special attention given to
traditional and experimental forms. The course may include other forms of poetry, such
as digital poetry, documentary poetry, and conceptual poetry. Students will read model
poems, write new poems, discuss strategies for writing and revising poems, and critique
each other’s work. The workshop model of critiquing each other’s work is integral to the
course with the aim to develop skills at editing, revising, and creative and critical thinking,
and to produce a series of new poems.
