ZHANG Yue is a PhD student in the Department of Humanities and Creative Writing at Hong Kong Baptist University and a recipient of the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS). She holds a BA in Film Studies from the Beijing Film Academy (2016–2020) and a Joint Master’s degree in Film Arts from Kino Eyes – The European Film Masters under the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree scholarship (2022–2024).
Her research interests sit at the intersection of cinematic representation, narrative studies, gender, and film history. Her doctoral dissertation investigates the cinematic representation of Mainland China’s family planning policy, examining how state biopolitics, personal trauma, and gendered memory are negotiated through narrative cinema.
Alongside her academic pursuits, Yue is an award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker whose creative work has been recognized at major international film festivals, including the Beijing International Film Festival (BIFF) and the Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF). Her creative practice frequently probes women’s lived experiences, psychological trauma, and the complex intersections between personal memory and broader societal transformation.
